RICHMOND, Va. – The Ƶ of Virginia and national Ƶ are committing $1.8 million to educate Virginians on the candidates running for Attorney General this November, as well as candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates in five key districts — the Ƶ’s largest investment to date in voter education in Virginia.

“In the face of federal attacks on our civil rights and civil liberties, Virginians have the opportunity to elect leaders who will shore up our rights here at home,” said Ƶ-VA Executive Director Mary Bauer. “Every Virginia House race is a frontline in the fight for our civil rights, and we’re committed to making sure that voters in key districts know whether their candidates will protect their basic civil rights – or roll them back.”

Virginia’s proximity to the nation’s capital, where President Trump is engaged in a relentless campaign to abuse his executive powers, has put special emphasis this year on how federal politicians are threatening Virginians’ freedoms.

But state lawmakers have the power to protect working Virginians, because they are empowered to pass laws and policies that can protect – or restrict – Virginians’ civil rights even beyond federal standards. During the 2025 state legislative session, for example, Virginia lawmakers passed language for three amendments to Virginia’s constitution to protect Virginians’ right to vote, marry who they love, and get the reproductive healthcare they need. The legislature must pass this exact language a second time in the upcoming session before Virginians can vote on those amendments themselves in November 2026.

Virginia’s attorney general, too, has an outsized impact on our civil liberties. The current attorney general urged the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and supported a statewide abortion ban. But on November 4, Virginians have the chance to elect an attorney general who shares their views on civil rights in the Commonwealth.

That’s why the Ƶ has launched a $1.8 million campaign focused on educating voters about the candidates’ positions on civil liberties issues that matter most to Virginians. Through direct mail and digital ads, the Ƶ of Virginia and Ƶ are working to ensure voters know which candidates are committed to safeguarding their civil rights.

“Virginia is the last state in the South without an abortion ban, and the lawmakers we elect this November will have the power to decide whether Virginia stays that way,” said Bauer. “Reproductive freedom is just one example of how Virginians can vote their values, and how our elected representatives can uphold them. It’s crucial that voters know the facts.”

The Ƶ of Virginia and the Ƶ do not endorse or oppose candidates, but want to ensure voters know their candidates’ positions on civil rights and civil liberties issues so they can cast an informed ballot.
