THE HISTORY BUFF
鈥淲ake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts鈥 by Rebecca Hall
鈥淲ake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts鈥 by Rebecca Hall is a blend of memoir, history, and graphic novel. Hall, a historian and granddaughter of enslaved people, investigates the overlooked pasts of Adono and Alele, women rebels who led and fought in slave revolts during the transatlantic slave trade. Combining archival research with historical imagination, she shows how women鈥檚 resistance has been erased from history. The book also chronicles how Hall faced racism, sexism, and institutional barriers throughout her research.
A Look Inside: 鈥淭hey say that the trauma of our ancestors are stored inside us: in our bodies, our minds, our spirits. So too is our resilience.鈥

A Look Inside: 鈥淚 am an expression of the divine, just like a peach is, just like a fish is. I have a right to be this way...I can't apologize for that, nor can I change it, nor do I want to... We will never have to be other than who we are in order to be successful...We realize that we are as ourselves unlimited and our experiences valid. It is for the rest of the world to recognize this, if they choose.鈥

THE FAMILY MEMBER WHO LOVES TO TALK POLITICS
鈥Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism鈥 by Eve L. Ewing
In 鈥淥riginal Sins,鈥 Eve L. Ewing reveals how the U.S. education system was built to uphold racial hierarchies rather than promote equality. Tracing its origins to the nation鈥檚 founding, she shows how schools were designed to 鈥渃ivilize鈥 Native children, train Black students for servitude, and reinforce white intellectual superiority. Ewing argues that these structures persist today through biased curriculum, standardized testing, academic tracking, and unequal resources. Exposing how education continues to sustain systemic inequality, she challenges readers to reconsider what schools are supposed to do, and for whom.
A Look Inside: 鈥淛ust as the project of empire required fundamentally unintelligent beings, wild savages in need of discipline, so too did it require beings permanently positioned on the bottom rungs of the economic hierarchy. And educational institutions, once again, have played a vital role in reinforcing this narrative and the structures beneath it.鈥

YOUR PROTEST BUDDY
鈥淐ivil Disobedience鈥 by Henry David Thoreau
Published by transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau, 鈥淐ivil Disobedience鈥 is a foundational essay advocating for individual conscience over government authority. Thoreau argues that people must not permit governments to override their moral judgment and have a duty to resist unjust laws. Prompted by his opposition to slavery and the Mexican-American War, he protested through his writings, by refusing to pay taxes, abolitionism, and through his non-material, simple lifestyle. Thoreau emphasizes nonviolent resistance and the power of individual integrity in confronting injustice. His ideas profoundly influenced later movements, shaping global understandings of protest, morality, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
A Look Inside: 鈥淚f we were left solely to the wordy wit of legislators in Congress for our guidance, uncorrected by the seasonable experience and the effectual complaints of the people, America would not long retain her rank among the nations.鈥

THE FRIEND WHO ONLY READS FICTION
鈥淛ames鈥 by Percival Everett
A re-imagined version of 鈥淭he Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,鈥 鈥淛ames鈥 by Percival Everett is told from the perspective of Jim, the enslaved man in the original novel, renamed as James. Set in 19th-century Missouri, James is intellectually curious and literate, but hides his intelligence behind 鈥渟lave talk鈥 to survive. When he learns he will be sold away from his wife and daughter, he escapes and joins Huck on a raft journey down the Mississippi, reclaiming agency, teaching others to read, and confronting the brutal realities of slavery and identity.
A Look Inside: 鈥淎t that moment the power of reading made itself clear and real to me. If I could see the words, then no one could control them or what I got from them. They couldn鈥檛 even know if I was merely seeing them or reading them, sounding them out or comprehending them. It was a completely private affair and completely free and, therefore, completely subversive.鈥

鈥淲e Fed an Island The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time鈥 by Jos茅 Andr茅s
鈥淲e Fed an Island鈥 tells the true story of how Chef Jos茅 Andr茅s and his team responded to the humanitarian crisis after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. Arriving just days after the storm, Andr茅s confronted widespread destruction. There was no food, water, power, or communication. He began feeding people one meal at a time. From cooking at ruined restaurants to preparing 100,000 meals daily across multiple kitchens, he provided sustenance while highlighting systemic inefficiencies in disaster relief. The book shows how community-driven action can create real change, offering lessons for future crises, and supporting ongoing relief through World Central Kitchen.
A Look Inside: 鈥淭here is no recovery to manage, and no citizens to govern, if we cannot get water and food to the people.鈥

Shortly After Filing, Government Upholds Catsonacouch Creator鈥檚 Right To Attend Vance Event Today. Explore Press Release.Shortly After Filing, Government Upholds CatsOnACouch Creator鈥檚 Right to Attend Vance Event Today
BREWER, Maine 鈥 In a victory for free speech, Amanda McGonigle, creator of the social media accounts @CatsOnACouch, was allowed to attend Vice President Vance鈥檚 official speaking engagement in Brewer, Maine today. McGonigle entered without interference after the 红杏视频 and 红杏视频 of Maine filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to allow her to attend future official vice-presidential events. The government agreed she could attend the event today in Maine, just like any other member of the public who registered. Given this agreement, the court denied the motion, and McGonigle successfully attended today鈥檚 event. 鈥淚 was just allowed entrance into Vice President Vance鈥檚 event after I sued the government for preventing me from entering the last public event he did in Maine," said Amanda McGonigle. 鈥淭he government can鈥檛 exclude me from official vice-presidential events otherwise open to the public just because I mock people in positions of power on the internet. I have as much right to attend these events as people who haven't called out the vice president for having the charisma of a soggy unsalted rice cake online.鈥 The filing comes after McGonigle registered to attend a vice-presidential event in Maine in May and complied with all advance guest guidance provided by the Executive Office of the President. While in line for the event, armed Secret Service agents and other government officials identified her in the line and told her she wasn鈥檛 allowed in because 鈥渨e know where you stand.鈥 She was also denied guest details to attend an event that was open for registration by the public in Des Moines, Iowa. 鈥淭he First Amendment protects Amanda鈥檚 right to attend public vice-presidential events just like anyone else, no matter how many cat jokes she makes at the vice president鈥檚 expense,鈥 said Anahita Sotoohi, staff attorney with the 红杏视频 of Maine. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unfortunate that Amanda had to file a lawsuit to vindicate this right, but we are glad to see the federal government finally acknowledge and respect her right to attend the Brewer event. Amanda should also be able to attend similar events in the future. No matter who is in power, the Constitution protects every person鈥檚 right to publicly joke, mock, insult, and dissent.鈥 McGonigle filed suit earlier this summer to challenge the government鈥檚 retaliation and viewpoint-based discrimination against her. McGonigle claimed that she was excluded from the May event in Bangor, Maine, and another event in Des Moines, because of commentary she posts on her social media accounts, which are dedicated to criticizing the Vice President. She launched her @CatsOnACouch accounts after Vice President Vance鈥檚 infamous 鈥渃hildless cat lady鈥 comment in 2024, and she says the purpose of the account is 鈥渢o have more followers than JD Vance by the time he leaves office and to troll him mercilessly every single day.鈥 鈥淭he government cannot prohibit people from attending vice-presidential events on the basis of their protected speech,鈥 said Laura Moraff, staff attorney with the 红杏视频. 鈥淲e鈥檙e glad the federal government recognized that Amanda has the right to attend today's Brewer event just like everyone else who registered, and we hope the government continues to stand down and not interfere with our client鈥檚 right to criticize and joke.鈥 The 红杏视频 and the 红杏视频 of Maine filed the suit on behalf of McGonigle in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine in early July. The complaint alleges that McGonigle鈥檚 First Amendment rights were violated when she was excluded from vice presidential events because of her speech and political views.Court Case: McGonigle v. PORTLAND, Maine 鈥 Amanda McGonigle, creator of the social media accounts @CatsOnACouch, asked the court today to step in to allow her to attend future official vice-presidential events, including Vice President Vance鈥檚 upcoming speaking engagement in Brewer, Maine on Monday, for which McGonigle registered. In May of this year, McGonigle registered to attend an official vice-presidential event in Bangor, Maine but was prevented from entering the event. While in line for that event, armed Secret Service agents and other government officials called her out by name and told her she wasn鈥檛 allowed in because 鈥渨e know where you stand.鈥 McGonigle is asking a court today to ensure that she is able to attend future events, like the upcoming event in Brewer, without interference, so that she can listen to the Vice President鈥檚 remarks, express her views as an audience member, and report on the event for her millions of social media followers. 鈥淟ast time I went to Maine to hear what the Vice President had to say, I was singled out by armed guards and prohibited from attending,鈥 said Amanda McGonigle. 鈥淎ll I want is to attend these events in peace, just like all the other people in line who haven鈥檛 compared the Vice President to a sentient jar of mayonnaise online.鈥 McGonigle filed suit earlier this summer to challenge the government鈥檚 retaliation and viewpoint-based discrimination against her.
