United States v. Simon

Location: Minnesota
Status: Ongoing
Last Update: October 14, 2025

What's at Stake

Representing the League of Women Voters Minnesota, Common Cause, and two Minnesota voters with past felony convictions, the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Voting Rights Project and ºìÐÓÊÓƵ of Minnesota have filed a motion to intervene in a federal lawsuit over the federal government’s demand that Minnesota turn over its entire voter registration rolls, including with voters’ sensitive personal data such as drivers’ license numbers and partial social security numbers.

Summary

The ºìÐÓÊÓƵ and ºìÐÓÊÓƵ of Minnesota have filed a motion to intervene as Defendants in a suit brought by the Department of Justice against the Minnesota Secretary of State, who refused to turn over voter file information except as required by law. The motion to intervene was filed on behalf of the League of Women Voters Minnesota, Common Cause, and two Minnesota voters with past felony convictions. Such justice-impacted individuals have often been targeted for removal from the voter rolls, even when their right to vote has already been restored. Concerns over unsubstantiated mass voter challenges and misuse of sensitive personal information have heightened the concerns of the League, Common Cause and many Minnesotans.

If intervention is granted, the civil rights groups will seek to prevent the federal government from forcing Minnesota to turn over the entirety of its voter registration database and to protect sensitive data within the voter rolls.
